You’ve likely experienced it before: that feeling of apprehension, uneasiness, and perhaps even fear brought about by a stressful situation. That’s the general feeling of anxiety, though the severity and the length of the feeling varies from person to person. (Note: if you feel like this for six months or more, you could have an anxiety disorder and should seek professional help from your doctor.)
While it may seem like these feelings won’t end at the exact moment you experience them, they absolutely will come to an end, and there are things you can do to seek relief during a time of anxiety.
Understanding anxiety
Symptoms
It’s important to realize that the way you experience anxiety could be entirely different compared to how a loved one experiences it. You may feel butterflies in your stomach and a racing heart while others may suffer from nightmares tied to a stressful event. There are some common symptoms you can look out for, though:
- Increased heart rate
- Rapid breathing
- Difficulty concentrating
- A feeling of restlessness
- Trouble falling asleep
Other feelings you might experience include painful thoughts or memories you can’t control, a general feeling of dread or worry tied to a specific place or event, or even panic or anxiety attacks.
Anxiety attacks
An anxiety attack brings about the feelings of anxiety, including all-consuming worry, distress, or fear. Anxiety attacks generally worsen leading up to a stressful event, though, again, they are experienced differently by everyone. Other common symptoms of an anxiety attack are as follows:
- Feeling dizzy or like you might pass out
- Dry mouth
- Shortness of breath
- Sweating
- Chills or hot flashes
- Numbness or tingling
Essential oils for anxiety
Aromatherapy makes use of essential oils to improve your overall well-being. It is said that inhaling essential oils stimulates the smell receptors of your nose which then send messages to your nervous system. Essential oils are also believed to have an effect on your body’s chemical and energy systems. As such, aromatherapy can serve as a natural remedy for anxiety.
According to Healthline, the following essential oils have been proven to help with anxiety and stress relief:
- Valerian
- Jatamansi
- Lavender
- Jasmine
- Holy basil
- Sweet basil
- Bergamot
- Chamomile
- Rose
- Vetiver
- Ylang ylang
- Frankincense
- Clary sage
- Patchouli
- Geranium
- Lemon balm
- Marjoram
