Most parents would probably agree: life would be a lot easier if babies could talk and explain how they’re feeling. This is especially the case when baby doesn’t feel well or can’t poop. If you’re going through this struggle right now, we promise you aren’t alone! We’re here to help you through this, though.
How often should a baby poop?
Not all babies poop as frequently as you might expect. There are a couple reasons for this. First, due to the nutritious nature of breast milk, sometimes a baby’s body absorbs most of it, which results in very little to travel through the digestive tract. When this is the case, a breastfed infant may poop as little as once per week. Second, some babies just have a slower digestive process which means they won’t poop as often. This is perfectly normal!
When to talk to your baby’s doctor
In any case, consult your doctor if you suspect your baby might be in pain when trying to pass a bowel movement. These are other things to make note of and bring up to the doctor:
- Difficulty or discomfort when pooping
- Bloody or black poop
- Hard poop
- Rare or infrequent poops (baby should poop at least once every 5 to 10 days)
What causes constipation in babies
Babies that are exclusively fed formula are much more likely to have constipation because it firms up poop more than breast milk. Additionally, a baby with a milk-protein allergy or intolerance is also more likely to experience constipation; milk-based formula or the dairy passed through a mom’s breast milk can cause this.
Note that when your baby switches over to baby or table food, what he or she consumes will play a role in what kind of poop is produced. Foods such as applesauce, bananas, and rice cereal have a track record of contributing to constipation.
Skinny Coconut Oil for constipation relief
Fun fact: What we’re about to tell you actually works for both adults and babies!
Coconut oil contains medium-chain fatty acids which are thought to help stimulate bowel movements and soften poop, which can relieve constipation.
Moms that are breastfeeding can introduce coconut oil into their baby’s diet simply by ingesting coconut oil themselves. This is always the easiest way to give your baby coconut oil, but it’s also safe to give coconut oil directly to your baby. You can do so by mixing a bit in with their food.
