As you replace your skin care products with nontoxic options, your deodorant should not be overlooked! In this blog, we explain the difference between antiperspirant and deodorant, and why you should make the switch now!
When antiperspirant or deodorant is applied to underarms, it is absorbed into the blood stream near lymph nodes, breast tissue, and other sensitive parts of the body within 30 seconds. We know many cancers are commonly discovered in these areas, so it is important to keep them free from synthetic chemicals, toxins, and hard metals.
IMPORTANT: Deodorants and antiperspirants are not interchangeable. They perform different functions, and have very different ingredients.
One common ingredient in antiperspirants is aluminum, which blocks sweat ducts to reduce wetness. Your body naturally cools off when you sweat, so blocking this action fights your body's biological response to being hot. Sweating also rids the body of toxins, and using an antiperspirant blocks this natural function. Lastly, sweating rids your body of bacteria that is produced in the underarm area, so preventing this can lead to irritation and infection. (Aluminum has been researched as a link to Alzheimer's disease and breast cancer, though no confirmed link has been found to date.)
Deodorants, however, do not contain aluminum and do not block sweat glands. The purpose of deodorants is to neutralize odors and kill bacteria. This can be accomplished using pure, natural ingredients with minimal (if any) side effects.
What are ingredients you should look for in deodorants? I'm glad you asked!
- Baking Soda - combats odor by neutralizing acidic and alkaline properties in the body.
- Coconut Oil - naturally antibacterial, preventing irritation and infections.
- Arrowroot - absorbs moisture without blocking sweat ducts
- Essential Oils - Add a natural fragrance that also kills bacteria, such as lavender, cedar wood, orange, lemongrass, and rosemary.
The Skinny Deodorants contain the first three ingredients, and you can find a blend for every taste in your home!
Cedarwood - The ultimate detoxifying deodorant. It contains cedarwood and other active ingredients that neutralize skin and draws out toxins and heavy metals. It has a neutral, earthy scent, and is great to keep handy in your workout bag or in the locker room.
Lavender - Containing lavender essential oil, this calming blend is great for those with sensitive skin or prone to irritation. Strong enough to neutralize odor, yet soothing with an appealing scent.
Bergamot - This blend has a fresh, citrus scent, and is great for using in the morning or when you need a shot of energy. Bergamot is naturally anti-inflammatory, so those prone to breakouts would benefit from this blend.
