The ketogenic diet and coconut oil

Whether it’s keto, paleo, Atkins, Southbeach, or the whole30 diet, there is no denying high fat diets are (and will be) a big trend for the foreseeable future. Healthy fats are the staple that holds these diets together. This article will focus on the ketogenic (keto) diet. It’s becoming common knowledge that “healthy fats” are the future, and cheap refined carbohydrates are "so 1996”…

MCT oil benefits

There are a lot of inaccuracies and misconceptions about keto today. The basic premise is this: In the absence of carbohydrates, your body will convert fat into "ketones" which are then used as energy throughout the body. Interestingly, Ketones are the only source of fuel your body and brain can use besides glucose. Medium chain triglycerides (MCT's) like those found in coconut oil, are easily converted into ketones by the body.

Why ketones?

Your body will make ketones from its fat, therefore they are more stable than sugar as an energy source. (No wonder the DoD and NASA are researching them!) They're fantastic as a weight loss tool, great for endurance athletes, a fantastic way to increase mental focus, all while absolutely crushing inflammation.

Additionally, keto is an amazing way to combat type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer. There are massive studies going on right now about how keto may positively benefit those with degenerative mental disorders like Parkinsons, MS, and Epilepsy (which it has a long proven track record of helping).

The truth is, there is much more we need to learn about keto, but what little we do know is absolutely astounding.

Is the keto diet hard?

While doing keto isn’t very complicated, it is quite different than anything you’ve ever done before and takes dedication.

The keto diet basics

  • Cut out all dietary sources of sugar and carbohydrates (total daily intake should be 30g or below)
  • Consume moderate levels of protein (lean body mass X 0.8 = grams of protein a day)
  • Consume the rest of your calories from healthy fats (use a fat calculator like this one)

Keto is actually very simple once you get a hang of it. In fact, many people prefer this diet to their old sugar-based diets. We highly recommend looking at additional resources (and speaking with your doctor) before starting the diet, though, because while generally safe (even long term), there are important things to remember and consider when undertaking any new diet plan. We will link our favorite resources at the end of this article.

The keto diet and coconut oil

Coconut oil is one of the world’s healthiest fats, and it is also the ultimate oil to incorporate into any ketogenic diet plan. Comprised of MCT and lauric acid, it has the combined 1-2 punch to provide serious energy and health benefits. Interestingly, what we are "discovering" about fats, are all long held beliefs in many other cultures that "Western" medicine seemingly dismissed.

A big piece of this “high-fat” push is on quality. You can’t simply consume trans-fats in place of corn syrup and expect to live forever! No, this is about identifying high quality pure fats like NutraLock™ Coconut Oil, olive oil, grass-fed meats, avocados, nuts, etc.

How to choose the right coconut oil

Not all coconut oil is made equally. Cold-pressed, expeller-pressed, RBD, and fractionated coconut oils are heated before or during extraction, anywhere from 120°F up to 450°F. These temperatures process and remove many of the health benefits that coconut oil is known to provide.

Many coconut oils, olive oils, and vegetable oils are created using chemicals, solvents, and metals like aluminum to process the oil. This means you get a final product tainted with chemicals and heavy metals; it means you get a final product that no longer has all the enzymes that nature intended you to have; and it means you get a product that was mass produced with the intent of cutting every corner possible to derive oils at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer.

Skinny & Co. Coconut OilHere at Skinny & Company, that is against everything we stand for. Everything we make is kept at less than 100°F during our patented NutraLock™ extraction process. In fact, since our oil is never heated, it takes 30 percent more coconuts to create. We never subject our oil to "fractionation" or RBD processes, so our product will never be chemically impure like many others. Our coconut oil is always created using wild-harvested handpicked Vietnamese coconuts and is made by us, never contract manufactured. We are committed to bringing you the purest and best coconut oil on earth.

After learning where and how MCT oil is made, we are thoroughly convinced that Skinny Coconut Oil is in most ways superior, in terms of quality and purity. We challenge you to trade a source of inferior fats for Skinny Coconut Oil and see what happens. Whether you go full-blown keto or you just want to clean up the quality of your diet, you are going to see results. It’s amazing what the body can do when you give it what it needs!

To get started, an awesome and easy way to drive ketones up and hunger down is to simply consume Skinny Coconut Oil in coffee or tea.
